Shocking and Unusual Civil Commitment Revelations

  Shocking and Unusual
   Civil Commitment Revelations

As we research civil commitment we keep uncovering circumstances which make us pause and wonder WHAT?? Allowing for the whole purpose (RUSE) of civil commitment, holding a person beyond their prison sentence on the belief they MIGHT commit another offense, and possibly holding them forever, we still uncover subtle but shocking or unusual things which is why we are starting this list. Will update over time, and if anyone can add something please e-mail us. In no specific sequence, here goes:

NEW....In Wisconsin: State also seeks reimbursement of costs of civilly confining sex offenders, from property and assets of their family members! Yipes...

....It never ceases to amaze us how many folks in society simply have not heard of civil commitment, and after explaining it to them, cannot believe it is happening in this day and age. Reality is, it is happening, and in 23 jurisdictions. Yes 23!
....As of 2015 there are thousands of folks civilly committed, and some have died of old age, medical conditions and even suicides. See left side of blog, way down, for a state-by-state list of death and suicide articles you can read about. And on top of that, where some have been released back into the community there have been protests and even vigilantism acts.
....Did you know there are women in civil commitment, and they are housed right along with the men. Constitutional violation? Probably..
....Juveniles offenses were the basis for civilly committing some. And, in Pennsylvania they ONLY civilly commit juvenile offenders, not adults.
....In Iowa the folks in commitment had to sue the state to get the state to remove "Toilet Cams" and they won the action. Maybe whoever approved them needs to be civilly committed?
....In Washington they held the first same-sex wedding in the civil commitment center.
....Texas, a civil commitment state, does not have a specific razor wired CC Facility like other CC states. Instead they house CC folks in the community in various commercial type half-way houses and the like. Effectively their CC Program is like being on parole, but with closer monitoring than folks really on parole. They are the only state that operates that way.
....In New Jersey they can commit someone for an offense which should have been a sex offense. You need to read this case and there are other like it. i.e., a non sex offense.
....In Texas "Since every man in civil commitment has at least 2 felony convictions, this meant any rule violation could result in habitual felon status and a possible life sentence. Most recently Gary Vines received a life sentence. He was six minutes late returning to the halfway house after waiting to pick up his heart medication. There are over 100 rules of civil commitment. It is impossible for a reasonable adult to follow all the rules simultaneously."

In other words, they simply change a administrative rule, and if that rule is violated then the violated CC statute says a felony has been committed and the guy goes back to prison (new felony). This ruse of a system is being used when the funds for CC run out, so this system transfers costs to the prison system, and no one cares about the violation of a person's rights. Shocking YES Now another example "Man sentenced to 30 years for violation of civil commitment," his actual violation was???
....In Minnesota, "A senior manager in Minnesota's sex-offender treatment program was reprimanded last summer for unprofessional behavior that put the program's health operations in disarray, according to a sternly worded discipline letter issued by the state Department of Human Services. One of many reason they are in court now.
